Living in Florida, there really isn’t a Fall.  We go from hot to not-so-hot to cold.  Fall is my favorite time of year, but school schedules can make travel tough. Thankfully, there are at least two long weekends in October for families to get their Fall on!

Asheville, North Carolina

SFB flies daily to Asheville in the Fall. You can see fall foliage and experience family-friendly adventures from hiking to waterfalls to touring the Biltmore Estate (kids should take the audio tour given by what was the Vanderbilt family dog, Cedric).  If you are interested in a little fantasy, Earth and Sky Dwellings is opening their Mystic Village, which they say “continues to weave its spell on all who wander its storied streets.”  The cottages in this Harry Potter-like place are all decorated to theme. Kids can get their mail from the owls at the post office, potions, and the apothecary, and at the end of the cobblestone street, a magic shop has dancing brooms, floating candles, and magic wands!

Allentown, Pennsylvania — Pocono Mountains

The leaves start turning in central Pennsylvania in September, so October is prime time for fall colors. ATV rentals are becoming very popular and there is always a zip-line opportunity. The Poconos have several scenic train rides, and you can even transport back to 1855 by hopping in a mine car at the No. Coal Mine and take the tracks over 1,600 feet into the mountain. The Poconos are famous for their all-inclusive family resorts. Rated the #1 family resort in the US, the Woodloch Resort has been in business for 65 years. It boasts 30 activities each day for the kids and golf and a spa for mom and dad. Great Wolf Lodge is one of several resorts with indoor water parks.

Appleton, Wisconsin — Wisconsin Dells

The Wisconsin Dells is a beautiful town along the Wisconsin River, a gorge formed by glaciers thousands of years ago. It’s a small-town vibe with family-friendly museums, theme parks, and day trips to scenic locales. But enjoying these activities surrounded by some of the most beautiful fall foliage in the country makes it special. The views in Devil’s Lake State Park are incredible. And coming this Fall, Aquavia Lumina, a super-cool night-time light show in the forest.
